Author Visits

During Dr. Stone’s author visit to Mrs. Zach’s Kindergarten class at Tarkington School, students discussed the life cycle of a butterfly.

Reading and discussing I Am a Butterfly taught the children about the monarch butterflies’ lifecycle and their special need for milkweed plants to lay eggs and eat when they’re caterpillars.

Children also had a chance to talk about change in their own life and how they’re like a butterfly.

Additional high-quality photos were shared that taught children about the intricate lifecycle of the monarch, some of their predators, how they feed themselves with their long proboscis, identifying males and females, and much more.

Students also learned about how GMO plants, the weedkiller, Roundup, and insecticides threaten the monarch butterfly. Students learned they can plant milkweed and other nectar-bearing flowers in their gardens to help save the monarch butterfly.

We released the students’ painted lady butterflies and looked through Dr. Stone’s big 100-400L Canon lens to see how she’s able to take such detailed photos of a butterfly from so far away.
